What is the purpose of mankind on earth? Will the God particle reveal the origin of the universe? Stem cell research, Marty McFly’s hover board, virtual reality are just the few advancements in technology in the last decade. All the answers which have been provided and all the unanswered questions which are still lingering are the result of research. Curiosity is perhaps mankind’s greatest value, because it propels us forward into the future, pushing us past our limits to discover, innovate and improve. At the basis of it all, stands research which can be defined as creative work undertaken on a systematic basis in order to increase the stock of knowledge, including knowledge of humans, culture and society, and the use of this stock of knowledge to devise new applications.1 Through research we uncover new ideas, establish facts, confirm theorems previously constructed, discover new problems and find solutions to old ones. There are three types of research methods: Exploratory research (identifying a problem), Constructive research (testing of theories in regards to a problem) and Empirical research (feasibility testing of a solution to a proposed problem). The latter can be further classified into two categories: qualitative and quantitative research. The first deals with studying the real world, understanding human behaviour and the laws that govern society.
